This August, the Tidewater Rotary Club raised colorful flags around Easton for the third consecutive year of the Flags for Cancer. Each colored flag represented a type of cancer and every flag was flown in honor of friends and neighbors that have battled the disease.
The fundraiser raised approximately $24,000.00 with proceeds donated to the Colors of Cancer group to directly benefited The Mike Menzies Fund – a scholarship program assisting individuals who are pursuing a degree related to oncology, cancer research, or other cancer-related professions and the Richard Slaughter Fund – designed to help support cancer patients and their families through the Patient In Need Fund at the Regional Cancer Center.
“Raising money is easy compared to surviving and curing cancer,” Tidewater Rotary Club President Bill Crabson said. “Tidewater Rotary stepped up during the COVID-19 crisis and now charged through inflation to make a difference in the lives of local citizens. We value the remarkable mission of the Menzies and Slaughter Foundations.”
The event, sponsored by individuals and businesses, raised awareness for cancer and provided this important source of fundraising for the vital organizations helping people locally. Flags were displayed in town throughout the month of August and names of honorees remain on the Flags for Cancer website at TidewaterRotary.org/Flags.
